Mumbai-based Agrahyah Technologies is launching a new voice-based content platform, among the first such for Indian language content., which is scheduled to be launched in a few weeks, will be a web (desktop and mobile) and app-based platform which will have Hindi content to start with. It would also be available through voice assistants-based smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home.

“We will have content covering astrology, Bollywood, comedy and devotion, along with health and entertainment,” CEO Sreeraman Thiagarajan told ET.

It will launch with 100 hours of content, which has been recorded by actual people. This would be split into ten segments of ten minutes each. Some of the content has been produced at the actual places or sites which the segments talk about. For instance, a segment with a person talking about how the Yamuna River is revered as a mother was recorded on the banks of the river.

Agrahyah is focused on creating local language content to make technology more accessible to non-English speaking people. The company, a preferred partner for building Alexa skills, will also be doing a pilot of Hindi jokes on Amazon Alexa soon.

Thiagarajan said he was open to syndicating the content from Aawaz out to other platforms. “There is no syndicated Hindi language content available in India at present. We’d be happy to offer this to other platforms after we launch it on our own platform,” he said.

Next on the radar is creating content in Urdu by the start of 2019. The bootstrapped startup currently has 33 people and the plan is to take this to 50 by the end of the year, including a ten-member team for the Urdu expansion.

The potential for local language content in India is tremendous, Thiagarajan said. The Hindi-speaking population in India is pegged at about 42 crore, and there is low penetration of television in large parts of this market. However, most people do have feature phones or smartphones, and this is the segment that Agrahyah is aiming to tap into with its platform.
